Tall and darkly handsome, Tryon appeared in scores of television shows in the ’50s and ’60s - including the starring role in Disney’s “Texas John Slaughter” - and made about a dozen movies. He abandoned his stage name and persona - Tom Tryon - and wrote under the more authorial “Thomas Tryon.” “I just hate talking about Tom Tryon,” he told a reporter after switching careers. ![]() Tryon, whose best-known movie role was the lead in Otto Preminger’s “The Cardinal” in 1963, deserted Hollywood in the early ’70s and took up writing, with great commercial success. He died of stomach cancer, said his brother, William Tryon. C Thomas Tryon, the actor turned best-selling author who made his hometown of Wethersfield the fictional setting for his psychological thrillers and historical novels, died at his home in Los Angeles Wednesday at the age of 65. ![]()
